Niels Hoebers
Bringing analog synth to stopmotion
What they asked

For the Dutch Design Week 2017 in Eindhoven, stop-motion artist Niels Hoebers asked us to create the soundtrack for his biggest partnership project ever, within only one day of time. This year the Dutch Design Week, being the biggest design event of Northern-Europe, presented the works and concepts of 2600 designers to more than 335.000 visitors from all over the world.

Why we made this

Since this project has a short time-frame we were aiming for an authentic, basic sound. Ultimately we found the type of sound we needed by looking at our own vision of stop-motion videos: stop-motion is genuine; a real craft-work, as is the sound of analogue synthesizers. We became curious and enthusiastic to experiment how these analogue sounds would match with this great video and to work this out in one day

Niels Hoebers

Niels Hoebers’ work is characterised by the wide variety of different materials he uses in his animations. For this unique project Niels teamed-up with all its visitors of the Dutch Design week and created an ongoing stop-motion animation. As he animated non-stop, the audience provided him with content, choosing objects from the studio archive. For the total project which was being visited by 20.000 people, Niels used 9 days, 1139 animated frames and over 250 participants. According to Niels, The Big Stop motion Animation Improvisation Show was a great success.
